Mike Brown
Qwest Investment Management Corp. proudly supports Commonwealth Games Gold Medalist and 2008
Olympian, Mike Brown!
Mike Brown finished an impressive 4th place at the Beijing Olympics in the 200 metre breaststroke - following is an email Mike
sent to Qwest after his win:
First off I want to express how grateful I am to have had Qwest as a supporter of my journey to the Beijing Olympic Games.
It has been a crazy ride. As most of you know, I placed 4th at these Olympics in the 200m Breaststroke, coming just shy of my
dream of being on the podium by .09 of a second. I felt extremely proud, happy and sad all at the same time, it was a wierd
feeling. But having said that, my career leading up to these games has been the ride of a lifetime and memories that will
never go away. I lowered my Canadian record in the 200m Breaststroke by 2.2 seconds and broke the Commonwealth record as well.
My record time makes me the 4th fastest man in history in that event, in the world. And I couldn't have done this without your
support both financially and more importantly emotionally. Knowing that you guys are behind me really does make a
difference. So thank you!
At the 2006 Commonwealth Games in Melbourne, Australia, Mike Brown won Canada's first swimming Gold Medal since 1998. He made it to the top of the podium by winning the 200 metre breaststroke and demonstrated his personal commitment to excellence. He also confirmed the revival of the international swim program in Canada.
In his characteristic come-from-behind style, Mike powered his way on the last lap to touch the wall at a breathtaking 1/100th of a second ahead of the Australian silver medalist.
This achievement built upon his success at the 2005 World Championships in Montreal, where he won a silver medal, in Canadian record time, in front of a wildly cheering hometown crowd.
By 2004, Mike was well known within the swimming community, but he first made headlines and the front pages of mainstream national newspapers during the Athens Olympics, when at twenty years of age, he broke the Canadian record in the 200 metre breaststroke three times in three swims and finished sixth in the finals.
The Athens Olympics was a difficult time for the Canadian Swim Team, and the press was generally negative about the program. Mike however, did not sink with the tide of negativity. He did not break his concentration. He stated: "I didn't focus on any of the controversy outside, or what anybody said, or what the press said. Every ounce of energy I had was left in that pool".
His Olympic performance demonstrated Mike's strength of character, and again… his commitment to excellence.
As of May 2008, Mike is a 22 time National Champion, has been named Canadian Male Breaststroker of the Year in 2002, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007. Also in 2004 he was named Canadian Male Swimmer of the Year.
This past April Mike qualified for his second Olympic Games at the 2008 Canadian Swimming Trials where he shattered his own Canadian Record in the 200 Breaststroke.
